乌托邦理论为本书提供了研究视角和理论框架，同时，参照非裔美国政治、历史与文化以及宗教、音乐、食物等相关学科知识进行跨学科的整合研究。鉴于乌托邦这一概念本身的含混性与乌托邦理论的复杂性，本书主要采用露丝·列维塔的乌托邦定义、汤姆·摩兰的“批判乌托邦”（critical utopia）与“批判反面乌托邦”（critical dysto-pia）以及露西·萨吉森的“越界乌托邦”（transgressive utopia）概念。本书以内勒的前5部小说为文本，借鉴以上理论，探讨其小说中蕴含的乌托邦思想的嬗变历程，挖掘此变化背后的原因，揭示作者对性别与种族的理解，探究其乌托邦思想的独特性，进而揭示内勒对非裔美国乌托邦思想史的贡献。
