这是一部英语学习的中级教材，是为已经掌握一定基础的英语学习者进一步提高交流能力而编写的。其宗旨是主观能动地培养学习者说英语的能力。

该书把言语交流主要归纳为四大方面：(1)介绍情况(人或事物概况、自己的现状)；(2)讲述一个过程；(3)表达自己的观点；(4)与别人讨论问题。其中每个方面又大致分为五个话题，每个话题基本由两个短文和两个对话构成。

本书对英美国情文化和语法疑难点均做了适当的注释，这样，更便于读者学习理解。
