为了满足我国大学生完成基础阶段的英语学习后，进一步提高英语能力的需要，我社从剑桥大学出版社精选了四种教材，引进后汇成“大学目标英语”系列，旨在指导学生在更高阶段的英语学习，训练学生在碰到难度较大的英语文章时如何更有效地听、读、记笔记、思考和讨论，以及如何完成学习或考试中要求的写作任务。《高年级英语读写：学术英语初探》为该系列教材中的一种，具有如下特点：选用北美高校社科人文专业教材中的文章，引领学生走进专业英语世界，帮助他们熟悉该类英语的特色，提高学习该类英语材料的能力。指导学生如何以批判的眼光高效地阅读：课前课后分布数十种阅读技巧，如怎样预测、怎样速读、如何读标题和主题句、如何读新闻报道、如何读懂隐含意义等帮助学生全方位应对各类专业性英语文章。安排了丰富多样的写作任务：练习如何写各种体裁、各种类型的段落、文章，如何使写作语言丰富多变等等。写作以阅读为基础，又反过来促进阅读能力的提高。为学生如何攒高学习技能提供方法上的指导：穿插了做调研、记笔记、提高词汇量、准备考试等的系统方法。
