Last year I visited Dharamsala, India, home of the Dalai Lama, with my friend and for-mer professor, Robert Thurman, a renowned Indo-Tibetan scholar. While surrounded by monks and Westerners striving to attain happiness through Eastern teachings and medi-tations, it suddenly occurred to me that all I could think about was collecting art. Call it what you will, a sickness, a crass materialism, an obsession or a passion - there are many more like me who may never attain spiritual enlightenment but will continue to seek out great, and not so great, art objects that provide us with a meditative field of bliss, that transcendent feeling you get in front of a true masterpiece. Art was always a part of my life, but I didn't really look at works as eollectibles or investments, it was just another part of my upbringing.

Growing up next to the Guggenheim, many of my childhood friends were the sons of artists like Leon Golub or art dealers like Allen Frumkin. In my early twenties, I spent quality time at Studio 54 where I was introduced to "Andy's world" by my girlfriend. On my first visit to the Factory, Warhol tried to introduce us to a young artist named Jean-Michel Basquiat, with whom he had just completed a series of collaborative paintings. The work looked somewhat random to me at the time, and I was a bit put off by the fact that Basquiat was crashed out on a sofa and wouldn't wake up. Later, when we all went to see Michael Jackson's "Victory Tour" at Madison Square Garden, Jean-Michel smoked a spliff the size of a corncob. Like so many of my generation, I was mesmerized byMichael's presence - the signature glove and hat, the famous moonwalk. I also was caught up in the heady atmosphere of the Eighties art world, a world in which Andy andJean-Michel were personas no less compelling than the King of Pop. I've often wondered what I could have bought from Warhol and Basquiat in those days. Instead, all I have to show from the experience is a T-shirt that Andy signed and gave to me for my birthday.Years later, I found it, framed it, and proudly hung it in the bathroom.
