The familiar idea of the Celtic world is of a mysterious pagan people producing wondrous designs of knots and spirals, or of an Irish monk in a remote monastery poring over a beautiful illustrated bible. Both these images are just part of a story which covers many cen- turies and many countries. The earliest recognizable Celtic culture appeared at about 500 BC in Europe. The Celts were a people on the move. At its height, the influence of Celtic tribes spread from Asia Minor to northernmost Scotland.
