本书的叙述脉络相当清楚，它简要介绍了上起中世纪，下至20世纪的德国文学，其中作者着重评述了中世纪、17世纪晚期、19世纪和20世纪初期这几个时期的德国文学。本书的语言通俗流畅，少有生僻词汇，而对于其中个别困难词汇以及一些专有名词，编者亦在每页的脚注中都一一加以解释，凭借这些脚注做辅助，相信凡英语水平达到大学四级的读者都可读懂。

本书叙述脉络上起中世纪，下至20世纪的德国文学，着重评述了中世纪、17世纪晚期、19世纪和20世纪初期等时期的德国文学，并重点强调了其他文化，尤其是中国文学对德国文学的影响。

本书与通常文学史论著最大的不同之处，在于贯穿其始终的“纵横比较”意识：跨学科的比较、文学内部不同体裁之间的比较、不同历史时期的德国文学间的比较、德国文学与其他国家文学间的比较等。“引言”部分着重强调了将德国文学放在广阔的历史和文化背景中去呈现的叙述意图，强调让读者在一位由德国“伟大的老人”(马克思语)——歌德所提倡的“世界文学”视野中走近并认识德国文学。
