为了切实做好奥运培训工作，为举办一届“有特色、高水平”的北京奥运会、残奥会提供有力的组织管理和服务保障，实现“新北京、新奥运”的战略构想，由北京奥运培训工作协调小组策划组织，中国残疾人奥林匹克运动管理中心、中共北京市委宣传部、首都精神文明建设委员会办公室、北京市教育委员会、北京奥运会志愿者工作协调小组办公室以及北京奥组委人事部、新闻宣传部等单位具体承办，共同编写了这套北京奥运会通用培训系列教材。本书是其中关于北京奥运会英语口语训练读本。

本教材重点介绍了奥林匹克运动基本知识、北京奥运会和残奥会的简要情况、各行业服务保障人员的素质要求以及与奥运相关的英语知识，是对北京奥组委工作人员、志愿者、合同商工作人员、国内技术官员、窗口行业员工、大中小学学生、广大市民和观众进行奥运培训的基础教材。
