In a series of doubtless messy (and many would say morally unacceptable) experiments at the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine in the early '60s, dogs and chimpanzees survived vacuum exposures of up to three minutes. Human beings should do at least as well; although unconsciousness would occur in a matter of seconds, there would be no harmful after-effects if re-compression was carried out before lack of oxygen caused permanent brain damage.
