根据研究生教学大纲的相关要求以及研究生英语学习的实际需要，上海外语教育出版社组织相关院校编写了“新编研究生英语系列教材”，《学术综合英语》是其中之一部分。该书编写的主要日的是帮助研究生为尽早地进入学术英语学习打下一定的基础，全书以学术内容为主体，贴近研究生的实际学习和科研工作，能够帮助他们为在今后的实际工作中使用英语打下相应的基础。口语训练方面包括演讲、论文宣读、辩论、讨论、介绍等；写作训练方面包括写摘要、写指令、写概要、写学术论文、写报告等。这些项目基本上涵盖了目前和将来工作中可能涉及到的实用英语内容。

“新编研究生英语系列教材”由外教社组织国内10余所重点高校的专家、教授，在广泛的市场调研和对当前研究生英语教学实际情况进行详细分析的基础上，倾力打造而成！

《基础综合英语》和《学术综合英语》分别针对起点不同的学习者设计，以帮助学生打好扎实的语言基本功，并顺利过渡到学术英语的学习中；多样化的“选修课”可让学生根据自己的专业特点、兴趣爱好以及时间安排，自由选择相关课程，全面培养研究生的英语实际应用能力。
