As Chairman of the J.D. Fergusson Art Foundation, I am delighted tosupport the publication of the first fully illustrated catalogue of the FergussonGallery collection. To the few of us remaining who were lucky enough to haveknown the artist personally, it is a particularly gratifying occasion.
Over the past decade, we have witnessed the gradual realisation ofseveral of Fergusson's most dearly held dreams. These have resulted, in nosmall part, from the integrity and boldness of his far-sighted, personal vision.On his death in 1961, Fergusson left the largest and single most importantcollection of his works to his lifelong companion, Margaret Morris.Numbering several thousand items, this included oil paintings, water-colours, drawings, sketchbooks and sculpture, and represented all aspectsand phases of his experimental and varied output. In 1963 Morris estab-lished the J.D. Fergusson Art Foundation to enable the artworks to beadministered on her behalf.
