本书不同于传统的通信专业英语，针对职业特点，降低了难度，紧扣“即学即用”，突出口语的重要性。

教材首先安排了3个准备单元，收录专业常用的词汇、表达和简短的职业会话；正文12个单元中，前10个单元按照通信行业的业务分类讲述和训练，后两个单元选择宽带和移动语音业务进行强化训练；最后给出了12篇阅读材料，这些材料主要包括：中国通信行业和通信公司简介，教材正文未涉及的、尚未或较少在我国通信行业出现的业务介绍，与外国客户交流的技巧和知识，用户协议。为方便老师教学，在人民邮电出版社网站上还配有课文的参考译文，供教师下载。
