Renowned as America's pre-eminent black-and-white landscape photographer, Ansel Adams began to photograph in color soon after Kodachrome film was invented in the mid 1930s. He made nearly 3,500 color photographs, a small fraction of which were published for the first time in the 1993 edition of ANSEL ADAMS IN COLOR. In this newly revised and expanded edition, 20 unpublished photographs have been added. New digital scanning and printing technologies also mean that the book now offers a more faithful representation of Adams's color photography.

Ansel Adams has long been revered as America's greatest landscape photographer. His luminous black-and-white images showcase gorgeous subtleties of light and shadow and have become icons of the American West. But Adams also photographed in color, beginning soon after Kodachrome film was invented in the mid-1930s. In addition to commercial assignment work, he did creative photography in color, and his distinctive visualization of a scene and technical mastery are immediately evident in the beautiful images in this volume.

Overall, Adams made nearly 3,500 color photographs, but only a small fraction has ever been published. This newly revised and expanded edition of Ansel Adams in Color includes twenty previously unpublished photographs from the Adams archive. New scanning and printing technologies mean that Ansel Adams in Color now offers a more faithful representation of Adams' color photography than was possible before.

This reinvigorated classic is the only volume of Adams' color photography. In his late seventies, Adams began to think seriously about publishing a book of his color images, but it was not accomplished duringhis lifetime. In 1993, the Ansel Adams Trust asked the late master photographer Harry Callahan to select the best of Adams' color work for publication in a book. The new photographs in this edition were selected by John P. Schaefer and Andrea G. Stillman, both of whom collaborated with Callahan on the original selection.

Ansel Adams in Color includes an essay by photographic historian James Enyeart. A selection of Adams' fascinating, often contradictory writings on color photography accompanies the magnificent images, and adds another dimension to Adams' enduring legacy.
