本教程强调多种目的听说训练，以便学习者适应不同内容、不同形式的英语。整册书中编排有英语对话、访谈、故事、文章、报告、讲座以及演讲等内容。为提高学生的新闻英语听力的能力，每单元有3—5条新闻听力，并配有练习。与第一、二册相比，第三册适当增加了体育题材的附加听力材料，力求在为学生打下扎实的英语听力基本技能基础的同时，渗透体育专业英语，为学生以后的专业发展打下基础。

本教程是为体育院校英语专业学生编写的听说教程。课文选材广泛，有英语国家人士的日常对话，也有英美国家电台及电视台的新闻节目，并适量增加体育新闻、即席评论及解说等第一手资料。每单元分为听说两大模块，根据中国学生的特点编排学习重点，安排教学任务，编写有关练习，提高学生在真实语境中的听说能力。本教程还适于体育、传媒、翻译等专业的学生及研究生使用。
