1793年，大英帝国派往大清帝国的马戛尔使团到达中国，在热河行宫觐见了乾隆皇帝。 年轻的英国画家亚历山大作为使团的随团画家，从澳门到北京的往返旅行中，创作了大量反映当时中国世态风情的画作，随后在英国及欧洲风靡一时。 威廉·亚历山大著的《西洋镜(中国衣冠举止图解)》共收录200幅精美的彩色版画，描绘了皇帝、兵勇、仕女、商贩、戏子等，向我们展示了欧洲人眼中那个久远而又多姿多彩的乾隆盛世。

从18世纪开始，西方人就在十分认真地观察中国，他们画了大量的图像、拍摄了大量的照片，并将其带回了西方，让西方人看见中国是什么样子。作为马戛尔尼使团随团画家的助手，亚历山大在从澳门到北京的往返旅行中，创作了大量反映当时中国风土人情的画作，随后在欧洲引起轰动。这是两方画家第一次如此详尽地观察和描绘中国，也是将中心描绘得如此充满神奇浪漫色彩和异国情调的最后一个时期。威廉·亚历山大著的《西洋镜(中国衣冠举止图解)》收录了亚历山大仅有的两本著作《中国的服装》《中国人的服饰和习俗图鉴》中的绘画作品、搭配的文字研究内容及一些罕见的单张版画。两本著作合并出版，这在国内外均为首次。
