本书是《高级英语》(修订本)第二册的重排版。

本书收集的14篇课文皆为本世纪现代英语的原文，除其中两篇课文的个别地方外，文章一概未做任何删改或压缩。课文的难度逐渐增加。课文的题材和体裁力求广泛、多样，以利于学生扩大知识面和接触不同的文体。课文的篇幅比较适中，文字规范化，适于精读分析。

本书的练习项目一部分与上册相同(如内容问答、词汇、构词法、修辞手段等方面的练习)，目的在于复习巩固已学到的知识，另外增加了写注释、课文写作技巧分析、写作练习等新的项目。为配合分析课文的写作技巧，本书还安排了写作练习，包括句子、段落等方面的主要项目。
