张凡主编的《实用英语(炼化方向)》以岗位需要为出发点，秉着应用为本的设计理念，结合岗位、专业的实际需求设置内容，既涵盖了学生需要掌握的实用英语语言知识和交际技能，又融入了专业岗位的技术理论知识和实践知识，使学生通过本教材的学习，具备用英语处理与未来岗位相关业务的能力，并为今后的发展打下基础。

本教材采用“任务驱动”的教学方法，从炼化人员的岗位出发，将岗位工作所涉及内容以不同形式的任务展现给学习者，让学习者在“典型任务”的驱动下，通过完成一系列的工作任务，掌握相关的知识和技能，提高分析问题、解决问题的能力。

张凡主编的《实用英语(炼化方向)》按照高职院校的人才培养模式的要求，从岗位的实际需求出发，采用“任务驱动”的英语教学模式，把公共外语与炼化专业外语结合在一起。内容既包括了英语语言知识又涵盖了炼油技术专业岗位知识，共分为四大学习情境：撰写邀请信；在炼油厂接待外宾；设备介绍；炼化专业资料翻译。每个情境包含若干任务，学生通过完成一系列的工作任务，掌握相关的知识和技能，提高分析问题、解决问题的能力。
