《钱钟书手稿集（外文笔记共3册）》收录钱钟书1938-1949年所作的笔记，内容比以前更加丰富，除英语文学外，还有用法文和德文摘录的文学原著。本辑中包括了作者命名为“亭子间读书笔记”的系列笔记，可见钱先生在有意识地对自己的笔记进行整理和归纳。笔记中也更加准确地著录了目录信息，如书名、作者等，表明作者对待笔记的态度越来越严肃。
