The film shows in symbolic form the history of the Belarusian people, its centuries-old struggle for freedom ... Impassable bog marshes. Serfs, paving the way for Pan Sapieha, tormented with excessive forced labor. But the dream of happiness is not quenched. On midsummer night the people celebrate, dancing, the boys and girls wearing bright clothes. Youth looking in the woods for fern flowers - the flower of happiness. But thus is life, and dreams of happiness remain unfulfilled ... A civil war. The conquering Soviet government must defend itself against the numerous enemies: the Germans, the Belarusian volunteer army under Bulaq Balakhovich, the Poles. Rada of the Belarusian People's Republic of takes away from the peasants the land and sells to Europe timber. Demand from farmers ??? swear the last scion of the Gediminas - Prince Sapieha. But in the villages and towns were only old men, women and children. And Sapieha meets only the priests of different creeds. In one of the towns the Red Scout kills Colonel Balahovtsa. For this, the small town is destroyed and its inhabitants are shot. The alarm is sounded: "The fatherland is in danger!" And now, instead of a bugler on the hill - dozens, hundreds, thousands of riders. Emptying the factory shops, stopping the machines, workers go to the front. The Red Army expells the invaders from the Belarusian land. The war ends and begins a period of recovery. Instead of armored trains appear reapers, the soldiers become farmers to till the earth, the ruins of chimneys, factory shops come to life once again and begin to operate machines. In the fields where the battles took place, ears of wheat. Construction of new factories and power plants, digging of canals. Local guard the borders of the Republic represents the victorious outcome of the struggle of the Belarusian people for their liberation.
