本书试图从文化和交际的基本理论及其两者之间的关系入手,以跨文化交际学的基本理论和应用为框架,通过分析中西文化在言语交际、非言语交际中的差异,以及这些差异在社会礼仪和商务谈判中的表现,用以培养学生的跨文化意识,加深对母语和目的语文化的理解,最终提高跨文化交际能力。

全书共分九章:第一章为入门篇,介绍跨文化交际的定义、概念、发展及其意义;第二至第六章为理论篇,第二章介绍交际的基本理论及其在人类交际中的应用,第三章讨论文化的性质,包括定义、作用、特征及其差异;第四章集中阐述价值观的文化差异,介绍文化价值维度的观点;第五和第六章分别探讨文化差异在言语和非言语交际方面的种种表现,讨论英汉语言差异背后的文化原因。第七和第八章为应用篇,重点讨论社会礼仪和商务谈判中文化差异的具体体现和跨文化交际理论的应用。最后一章为实践篇,探讨文化适应和提高跨文化交际能力的有效途径。
