教育部于2017年颁布新的《大学英语教学指南》，希望学生“通过学习和使用英语，有效传播中华文化，促进与各国人民的广泛交往，提升国家软实力”。本教材旨在响应教育部的号召，针对国际交流中更为薄弱的视听环节，用双语撰写，从文化知识入手，在潜移默化中培养文化意识，提高文化自信。希望本教材既能适用于中外大学生，也能给对中国文化感兴趣的普通读者带来裨益。
本教材的编写特色如下：一、主题雅俗并存。本教材共8章，既包括贴近生活的习俗、食物、神话、文学、建筑主题，也有专业性比较强的哲学、艺术和中医主题。二、资料来源中外兼顾。文字材料非常丰富，中外作者的作品覆盖面广，风格多样。三、编写体例寻求英语技能、文化知识和演讲能力之间的平衡。
