For each of the buildings included there are numerous, accurate scale plans showing each floor, together with elevations, sections and site plans where appropriate. All of these have been specially drawn for this book and are based on the most up-todate information and sources. There is also a concise text explaining the significant architectural features of the building and the influences it shows or generated, together with one or two full-colour images. Cross-references to other buildings in the book highlight the various connections between these key buildings.

In the opening essay the author gives a brief overview of the development of architecture in the twentieth century, paying particular attention to the issues of spatial organization. The endmatter includes bibliographic references to the architects whose work is featured and to the individual buildings discussed.

The quality and number of line drawings allows all the buildings to be understood in detail and, together with the authoritative text and images, make this book indispensable for all students of modern architecture. Richard Weston, an architect, landscape designer and author, is Professor of Architecture at Cardiff University. Previous books include the monograph Alvar Aalto (winner of the 1995 Sir Banister Fletcher Prize) and the definitive monograph on the Danish architect Jorn Utzon, while The House in the Twentieth Century (2002) and Materials, Form and Architecture (2003) are both published by Laurence King.
