This book serves as the catalogue for the 1995-1996 exhibition of the Chatsworth drawings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington,and the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York.

Thirty-three years ago the 11th Duke of Devonshire and the Trustees of the Chatsworth Settlement, with a liberality characteristic of the Cavendish family, had allowed the Smithsonian Institution to exhibit,first at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, then at the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York, and successively at five other North American institutions, 114 drawings by European masters that had been selected from the Devonshire Collection. The selection and cataloguing were undertaken by the scholar who had the best overall understanding of the famous hoard of drawings, A. E. Popham (1889-1970), then Keeper of the British Museum"s Department of Prints and Drawings. The success in North America of this tour led to the same selection being shown in 1969 in London, the city where during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries the collection was formed and where it had been housed until the early nineteenth century. It led also to the circulation during 1969-1970,on the inspiration of Mrs. John A. Pope, then in charge of the International Exhibitions Foundation, of an entirely fresh exhibition.This was selected and catalogued by the Englishman who after Popham had the greatest breadth of connaissance in this field of art,James Byam Shaw (1905-1992). The second tour of 120 drawings chosen by Byam Shaw was shown first at the National Gallery of Art,then at the Pierpont Morgan Library, and at no less than seven other North American institutions. The standards of choice and scholarship,and the pleasure and interest that came with those, were again memorably high.
