本教程从培养学生的基本会话能力入手，以扩大词汇量和提高阅读能力为重点，兼顾对基础语法的系统讲解，内容注重实用性、丰富性和可读性，目的是培养学生的口语交际能力和通过阅读获取信息的能力。

该册共15个单元。每个单元均由会话、课文A、课文B、语法、练习五部分组成。会话内容紧密结合日常生活场景，语言地道、实用；课文A题材丰富，可读性强，语言规范，是各单元的核心内容；课文B的难度略高于课文A，适合学有余力的学生作为泛读材料学习；语法部分对英语基础语法进行了归纳、梳理，内容简洁、系统。为便于自学，对话和课文部分都附有注释。练习则是针对对话、课文A和语法部分的内容设计的。
