图书 ARTHUR HUGHES HIS LIFE & WORKS
内容
编辑推荐

ntil now Arthur Hughes has, with some justification, been called the unknownPre-Raphaelite. In spite of his close artistic andsocial connections with, among others,Rossetti, Madox Brown, Holman Hunt, Burne-Jones, William Morris, Tennyson and LewisCarroll, and although his work can be seen inmajor collections throughout the world, he hasbeen considered an elusive figure in the historyof British art.

This Catalogue Raisonne, the first book solelydevoted to Hughes's life and works, aims toredress the balance and put him firmly on themap. It shows him to have been an immenselylikeable and modest man, with a wide circle offriends and an extremely happy family life.More to the point, it also shows him to havebeen among the foremost painters of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. As a good figure painter, especially of children, and a talented colourist,he was sensitive to the aims of the Brotherhoodand a leading exponent of their technicalpractices.

Over 80 when he died in the early years of the20th century, Hughes's wide range of subjectmatter and output, both as painter and bookillustrator, would be difficult to match. So it isnot surprising that the popularity of his betterknown paintings and the enormous pricesrealised for them on the rare occasions whenthey appear for sale, have whetted the appetitefor a work of this nature.

Stephen Wildman's authoritative biography, and Leonard Roberts's scholarly researchdocumenting each of Hughes's knownpaintings and illustrations from widely scatteredsource material, including Hughes's owndelightful and prolific letters, make thisimportant publication the standard referencework on an artist who at last receives theattention he has long deserved. The book isgenerously illustrated with over 250 black andwhite and 110 colour plates.

At the end of the 20th century books such asthis are rarely published; when they are, one canonly applaud the contribution they make to thebetter appreciation and understanding of arthistory.
