The Deep takes us down under the waves and in truly stunning photographs shows the hidden mysteries of the oceans. Seventy-one percent of Earth is made up of water which volume provides as much as three hundred times the amount of living space for its numerous inhabitants as does the land surface of the Earth. The sheer variety of lifeforms that live in this liquid environment from the microscopic plankton all the way up to gigantic whales provide more than enough scope for a lifetime's study and more discoveries are being made about the oceans all the time.

Some of the most exciting life on planet Earth lies beneath the ocean and, despite its proximity, much of these waters especially in the depths lie unexplored. What we do know about the seas reveals the astonishing variety of life that manages to survive even in the most extreme conditions possible.

The Deep looks at all the major lifcforms of the oceans, the plankton the smallest indicators of healthy, clean waters; the krill whose eighty-four different species form the food for many ocean creatures; marine worms some of which are found in the hottest and deepest parts of the ocean; crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters; the mysterious and still little understood cephalopods (these include squid, octopus, and cuttlefish) that can change color and move using a form of jet propulsion when the mood takes them. Then there are the fish of which there are over 24,600 different species and whose range of color, size, and shape often defies belief. Finally, there are the cetaceans, oceanic mammals, of which the dolphins and whales are the best loved. All of these and many more marvelous creatures ,{re shown in all their beauty and extremes of environment-- The Deep--is an ideal book for anyonei ntcrcstcd in the bcauty and magnificenceof nture and of the oceans in particular.
