本套教材以建构主义理论为指导思想，以交际法、主题教学法为主要的教学理念，以美国主流电视媒体新闻作为主要视听学习资源，使学习者通过形式多样的听力和口语等教学活动，进一步提高口语交际能力。全书分为上、下两册(配有光盘)，每册均包括10个单元，每个单元为4～6学时。教材使用对象为具有一定的英语听力水平和口语表达能力，能基本听懂英语国家新闻报道的大学本科二年级英语专业和非英语专业的学生。本书为上册。
