本书是为高等学校土木工程专业学生学习专业英语所编写的教材。编者认为开设“土木工程专业英语”的目的是应充分培养学生学习专业英语的兴趣，调动学生学习专业英语的积极性和主动性，自觉自愿地阅读英语专业文献，从而提升以英语为工具与国际同行交流专业知识的能力。因此，本书收集的资料在注重知识结构完整性的同时，通过引入大量的插图以及对世界土木工程界名人、有特色的工程结构以及若干重大结构失效原因的介绍，增加本书的生动性和趣味性。
