本教材是依据《高职高专教育英语课程教学基本要求》所编写的，书中充分体现了《基本要求》中提出的对于非英语专业英语课程的教学目的，它将“实用为主、够用为度，以应用为目的”的理念融入其中，力求使学生在听说、语法、阅读、写作技巧、翻译技巧和各种应用文体和实用信息的读写上达到能够胜任工作并能通过“高等学校英语应用能力考试”。本教程分8个单元，每单元围绕一个功能主题展开，该主题体现在听说、课文、写作和实用阅读等各方面。该书可供各大专院校作为教材使用。
