在民众中世世代代口耳相传的民间故事，是人类的弥可珍贵的非物质文化遗产。中国幅员辽阔，人口众多，历史悠远，各民族的民间故事尤为丰富多彩。20世纪50年代以来，各地各民族对于民间故事的采录工作卓有成效，早已蔚为大观。《中国民间故事精粹》正是为了便于青少年阅读和国际文化交流的需要，从大量的采录成果中挑选出一小部分精华，加以必要的整理改写而成，并译成英文出版。
