本书旨在于培养海洋船舶驾驶专业的学生具备船舶值班驾驶员履行正常工作所必备的一定英语听说能力，达到规定的船舶操作级驾驶员的适任标准，协助学生取得船员适任证书考试资格。

本书的内容主要以无限航区3000总吨及以上船舶二/三副驾驶员职务为标准。本书共有十个单元，每个单元含2～5课不等。每课的设计视内容而定，一般包括五至七个部分：背景知识，会话，听说练习，听力，角色扮演，话题陈述和回答问题，补充材料。每课的设计将认知、练习、掌握、巩固和应用几个环节有机地结合起来，有目的地训练学生日后在船上工作的英语听说实际应用能力。

本书共分十个单元，内容包括甲板设备、船舶口令、进出港业务、靠离泊与锚泊业务、消防与救生、遇险与救助、装卸货作业、航行、港口国检查和船舶保安等方面的通信用语和业务用语。每个单元视内容含2～5课不等。每课由背景知识、会话、听说练习、听力、话题陈述、问答题和补充材料组成。本书配有录音光盘一张。

本书可作为高职高专航海类船舶驾驶专业学生航海英语听力与口语教材，也可以作为船舶驾驶员为提高航海英语听说的自学用书。
