国防编写的这本《基于语料库的英语话语标记语分析》首先交待了话语标记语研究的背景，并对本书写作的研究目的、研究方法及现存的有关话语标记语的争议问题进行了简单介绍。同时，对本书所选用的伦敦-隆德英语口语料库也进行了简要描述，并简单介绍了本研究的分析步骤。

本书继而对相关文献进行综述从而挖掘以往在话语标记语研究方面的成绩与不足，进而找到解决问题的理论基础、研究角度及研究方法。本书以语篇学、功能语言学及语用学相关理论为基础，为话语标记语的研究建构了一个综合分析模式。模式由会话结构域、内容域和人际交往域三部分组成；三部分相互联系，层层递进，进而达到语篇连贯的目的。本研究所涉及的所有话语标记功能的分析都将依据此模式进行。
