本书面向大学英语专业高年级学生及有一定英语基础的文学爱好者。目的是介绍美国文学的精粹，为理解、分析所选作家及其作品提供指导和帮助，提高读者的阅读水平和欣赏能力。丛书分为上、下两卷。上卷介绍了美国文学发展初期到19世纪末的美国文学；下卷介绍了20世纪的美国文学，侧重于小说和诗歌。钱青编著的《美国文学经典选读(20世纪)》为下卷，共收入了26位美国作家的作品供读者欣赏，其中有七八位作家是当代的，一直写到20世纪后期。20世纪的美国文学，虽然只有200多年历史，已成为世界文学一个重要支流。美国共有12位诺贝尔文学奖获得者。这从一个侧面可以看出美国文学的生命力以及在世界上的地位。

钱青编著的《美国文学经典选读(20世纪)》收入了20世纪26位美国作家的经典作品，包括弗罗斯特、杰克伦敦、T.S.艾略特、菲茨杰拉德、福克纳、海明威、厄普代克等美国文坛杰出人物的代表作，涵盖小说、诗歌等多种体裁，浓缩了美国20世纪英语文学的精华。为帮助读者理解，编选者还为入选的每位作家撰写了生平简介，为入选篇章提供了大量注释并设计了若干讨论问题，是英语专业学生及英语文学爱好者全面了解美国文学、提高英语阅读水平能够和欣赏水平的理想读物。
